As a single mom, I broke many of the typical "rules" observed in the U.S., to the chagrin of my conservative parents. I allowed my college aged kids to share a room with their significant others in my home. I figured they were already doing the deed, so no point pretending otherwise. I also allowed them to have a glass of wine or beer with dinner in their late teens. I've been super transparent with both my kids about the topics of sex and drugs, and we have had many good conversations. Both are grown up (23 and 28 years old), with no surprise pregnancies or substance abuse issues. Our relationship has evolved, as they've grown and I love how we can talk about anything and everything.
